A reminder is a written or digital reminder asking a debtor to still pay an outstanding invoice. The reminder is sent after the payment deadline has passed. The reminder usually includes the invoice number, the outstanding amount and a new payment due date. Depending on the stage, a reminder may also indicate possible follow-up steps in case of non-payment. The goal is to encourage payment without taking immediate legal action.
Context in credit management
Within accounts receivable management, the dunning constitutes a first or second step in the follow-up process. The timing and tone of the dunning letter determine its effectiveness. A structured dunning process prevents arrears from building up unnecessarily.
Example
After the payment deadline has passed, the customer will receive a reminder requesting that the outstanding amount be paid within seven days.
